Chapter 17

At that moment, a thousand thoughts simultaneously screamed for attention inside her head. Sorting through them proved difficult, at best. Then her nightmares concerning the battle of Ragnarok propelled to the forefront, shoving all other thoughts into the back of her mind. Bryn stepped forward then, to tell her that in a sense she already witnessed Tristan’s death, many times over. Perhaps, through the dreams, she prepared her to see it as it happened all along. She prepared her because she needed to see the unfolding events. The details of Tristan’s death had a purpose.

Shae understood then, without question, she needed to take Tristan up on his offer. Swallowing back her fear, she fused her gaze with his, shook her head, and tried very hard to sound confident. She lifted her chin a notch.

“No, that’s where you’re wrong. It’s a very good idea, Tristan,” she declared with sudden certainty. “I know, somehow I just know, this is something I have to do. You just can’t expect me to like it.”

She could see he debated the issue, and that he regretted even mentioning it to her. Shae could not permit him to change his mind. Not now—not after she made the decision to move forward. He must allow her to proceed. The sooner the better, before she changed her mind. Without giving her resolve the opportunity to falter, she stood to her feet, and Tristan followed suit.

She gave him a smile meant to reassure, and said as if they both agreed to the plan, “Now that we have that settled, let’s get started. Shall we watch your hideous movie in here or would you rather go upstairs where it’s dark and spooky?”

Tristan’s lips twitched for a moment before the broad smile appeared on his face. He followed the smile with outright laughter.

She failed miserably to appear straightforward and brave when she made her statement. So what. Still, the look on his face irritated her. “Tristan—”

As he regained control, he shook his head and said, “I’m rescinding the offer.”

“Oh, I think not.” Shae slammed her folded arms against her chest and defiantly met his gaze. “It’s too late. I’ve already accepted your offer, so you can’t take it back.”

“Really? Do you think you can see the memory without my help?” he shot back.

“Tristan, don’t back out on me now.” She took a step toward him, placed a very light hand against his chest, and locked her gaze with his. “I’ll be the first person to admit there is at least a million other movies I’d rather see right now. Nevertheless, I know that I must see this one, whether I like it or not. This is something I have to do.”

“No, you don’t have to do anything,” he said as he placed a gentle hand against her cheek. “I’m sure there is nothing more to learn than what I have already told you. There is no need to put you through that particular experience.”

“No, we can’t be sure.” Shae inched her way forward, so as not to step through his feet.
